Being Human Location Stalking – Series 5 Locations

So for my birthday i decided to go to Wales and have a scout for some of the locations used in being human series 5. Here’s a guide to what i saw, how you could see them and where you can find them (with a few pics thrown in for good measure)

Tredegar House

Tredegar house is located in Newport around 10 miles away from Cardiff. The house is open to the public and is run by staff from the national trust. A small fee gains you entry for an entire day.  The house has been used in being human since series 3 including scenes with Mitchell and Herrick.

For series 5 the house has again been used on several occasions and almost all the locations used can easily be found.

Lady Catherine is seen running through these gates in the opening scenes of episode 1.

This is the room which housed a little rough and tumble in episode 1.

Myself and several bloggers were in a scene from episode 3 in the gardens to the rear of the house.

Lady Mary is greeted on this staircase by Hal and Alex in episode 3.

There was also a scene filmed in the main reception area of the house.

And finally this is where Alex and lady Mary part ways at the end of the episode.

The Barry Grand

The Barry grand is obviously a huge part of series 5 and in the show gives the illusion that it is based on Barry island. The filming however took part at the Maerdy hotel which is near bridgend in Wales around 30 miles away from Barry. The hotel is now closed and is up for sale for around £600,000. I contacted the owner and managed to convince him to let me have a look around! The hotel is now empty so the rooms look a little bare.

The furniture is now pushed into a little corner out the way.

Here is the room that was used as Hatch’s bedroom.

And the corridor where a scene with Julian Barrett took place.

I am assured that these rooms also have promise, although i have no idea why just yet….

Honolulu Heights

Honolulu heights is obviously not a new addition this series. Since our original trio moved in during series 3 it has held our hearts. The house is located on Canon street in Barry and only looks slightly different to what you see in the series. The house has a red door which in the series is black. The street on the show is coastview road but the street sign actually says Romilly Road. (The coastview sign is now on my bedroom wall) There are also no shutters and the HH sign is obviously not there. It is an absolute must if you plan on visiting being human locations.

The Castle Hotel and Bar

This location is brand new and made its debut in episode 5 of this series. The bar is located on lower jewel street in Barry and is open to the public. So far all we have seen from this location is Hal’s ‘puttin on a ritz’ online scene and him entering to massacre the regulars at the end of episode 5.

The bar is by far the favourite of all of the locations i have seen from series 5. It is exactly as you see it in the scene and i felt relaxed there as well as felt i could be silly and reenact the scenes which i like to do for lolz.

The Archives

The scenes filmed with Rook in his offices are filmed at the Glamorgan archives which is next to the football ground in Cardiff. The area in which being human actually filmed is closed to the public. I phoned and made an appointment and had to get special permission to enter. Beware, if you want to see this you will need to call ahead and make sure you get permission before you turn up. It’s so worth it though as the guy who showed me around was lovely and the room itself was amazing!

The Park House Hotel

This is a restaurant which is almost directly opposite Cardiff museum. This restaurant was first used in series 4 when cutler took Tom for a meal and again in series 5 when Tom took Natasha to eat here.

I also believe that there may be something included on the DVD that we havent seen yet that was filmed here, but we will have to wait and see!

The Old Natwest Bank

This building was used in series 5 for the basement which contains a cell. The cell is where Hetty was held as well as Crumb. The building was also used to film the scenes where Alistair Frith’s office is. Unfortunately the security was unable to gain access to the cellar and so i could not see the cell itself. i did get to see this room which was apparently used.

And this looks as though it may have been used if my memory serves me right.

If i were to go again i would call ahead and see if it would be possible to gain access to the basement as it was clear that i was a bit of an inconvenience and an appointment would have been far more useful.

The street

Finally this is the street where the old natwest bank is located. I believe it is used in the final episode of being human from the spoilers and clips we have seen so far.

All in all, these locations are well worth a visit for any being human fan. Some pre-planning is required for a couple of the locations but all of the people i have spoken to have been more than happy to help. People of Wales are always calm and polite….i haven’t met one with the materials to build a bomb though…..yet.
